The usage context is extreme: an exhausted parent, one free hand, a dark room, often the middle of the night. Every extra step means the entry simply doesn't get made.
A diary for the first year, used one-handed at three in the morning.
We reduced the core actions to a single tap from the home screen and used a dark palette that doesn't blind you in a dark room. The statistics come later — capture has to be instant, review can wait until morning.
